 –Chapter Promotion and Recruitment Event

In order to promote our chapter and attract more new members, we held a spring out. We chose LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA in Shanghai as our destination to attract more freshmen major in optical engineering, since most of them are quite interesting in this exhibition. Meanwhile, we could visit the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIOM) and build our networking with the OSA student chapter at SIOM.

March 17, 2015, 11 members of the student chapter of the Optical Society of America (OSA) at Zhejiang University travelled to Shanghai to visit the LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA and SIOM.

LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA was held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center March 17-19. As Asia’s largest laser, optics, optoelectronics industry event, from basic research to industrial applications, LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA lead the industrial trends, showcasing the full range of product, including lasers and photonics, optics and optical manufacturing, laser production and processing technologies, imaging, detection, and quality control. The exhibition attracted 715 exhibitors from 20 countries worldwide, showing their latest products, technologies and equipment.

As soon as the members stepped into the exhibition hall, they were attracted by all sorts of the exhibitions on display. In conventional optical exhibition, machine vision is undoubtedly a popular theme, which is usually used for production control and testing. The workshop on Machine Vision attracted a large number of participants. In laser and laser processing exhibition, all kinds of lasers, such as ultrafast lasers, high-power lasers, fiber lasers, semiconductor lasers, made the members appreciate the rapid development of laser industry. What the students saw gave them a more clear and comprehensive understanding of the practical applications of optoelectronic industry, which means a lot for their future research work.

March 18, the members came to SIOM. Leading by the president of OSA student chapter at SIOM, we visited the Laboratory, which focuses on the Shenzhou Ⅱ project. They are now building the ninth laser road to enhance the power, which is important for fusion reaction. During the visit, some members communicated their ideas with the president of OSA chapter at SIOM in depth.

We came back to Hangzhou in the afternoon of March 18. This visit to Shanghai broadened our horizon of the optical technology and industry, also gave us a chance to get in touch with the research of SIOM.

Through this activity, we attracted 11 more new members to our chapter. Additionally, we met with the OSA student chapter at SIOM and exchange our experience in holding activities.

With the arrangement of the previous day, at 6:30 a.m. on the 23rd, 27 members from Center for Optical and Electromagnetic Research of ZJU congregated and then went to Hangzhou Railway Station together. Along the way we felt very excited, the bus is also unimpeded. We took the D5604 train to Huzhou. At 9:30 a.m., we arrived at Huzhou city and went straight to the TieFo Temple founded in 713 AD. After this visit, we had a typical lunch full of local features, the Wonton and buns which were two of “Huzhou four famous dessert”.

Following the delicious lunch and happy communication, the Museum of Chinese writing brush from Huzhou was our second destination. Huzhou writing brush, one of the “the four precious articles of the writing table”, is an important symbol of brilliant Chinese civilization. The diverse display shows the inheritance and development of Chinese culture, many members were attracted by the paintings and calligraphy exhibition of masterpieces. In the sunny afternoon, going sightseeing a local famous park was a wonderful choice for us. Members had a relaxing strolling and got a lot better at knowing each other.

Through investigation and vote, former Treasurer, Xiaoyan Wang was honored to be the new President of our student chapter. The four former officers reported the past year working and highly praised Xiaoyan Wang’ efforts, which was also recognized by attending members. It’s deeply believed that under her leadership, OSA Student Chapter at Zhejiang University will benefits members more opportunities and even broader exchange platform, do more for also the society and go further.

The next day saw the wonderful travel around Nanxun Ancient Town that is one of the “Chinese Six Famous Ancient Towns”. Here are many monuments, which are in harmony with natural beauty, full of historical and cultural heritage and aura. Discovering the residence of an ancient culture is also part of the pleasure that awaits the traveling visitor. Current Status of the Chapter & Increase of membership

The OSA Student Chapter in Zhejiang University (OSA@ZJU) is located in COER (Centre for Optical and Electromagnetic Research, Department of optical engineering, Zhejiang University, China), an international lab aiming to research the frontiers in optics and photonics. Members here are all enthusiastic students from
all around the university, majoring in optics, photonics, physics and chemistry. They are committed to passing the “light” to the next youth generation, developing the OSA’s influence in China, and “light” everyone’s life and the world!

Period from the October 2012 to the March 2013 has witnessed the unprecedentedly amazing development of the chapter. Some remarkable data and pictures below should be remembered:
● The influence of chapter got a further step. The members have been increasing from 22 to 42 during this period, which means the rate of increase is almost 100%!

Liangzhu Activity held in Liangzhu, Hangzhou

The fellowship between the Student Chapter of the OSA and the undergraduates from tourism management is held on last Saturday, Oct. 27th. Everyone spent a meaningful and joyful day in Liangzhu, Hangzhou.

The students arrived at the Liangzhu Museum in the early morning, where an enthusiastic volunteer gave us a warm reception. Then she showed us the main collections of this museum and plenty of the detailed information of Liangzhu lying in these antiques. Through her introduction, the students got a better understand of the historic town of Liangzhu and its splendent culture. We realized that both the sculpture and manufacture were advanced long long ago in Liangzhu, the achievements of which are even difficult to accomplish today with modern technology.

Soon after the visit of the museum, we went to the Yeluwan manor for outdoor activity at about 12:00pm. A barbecue was done by ourselves for the lunch, which consist of various meat and vegetables. The students were divided into several groups to prepare their food and tools to barbecue the materials purchased by the organizers. Through the final baked food might not be so delicious than we ate before in the restaurants, everyone were content with what they and their partners cooked. By the way, the full procedure of the barbecue was filled with rejoicings since some students had never barbecued before.
The real counter-strike was held as the last activity of this association. Split up into two groups were all the present students to fight against, i.e., everyone was equipped with a fake gun to shoot the enemies and the group with the more persons alive shall be the victor. The team cooperation for the group was emphasized during this virtual war. All the students went back to the school after this game at 5:00pm or so.
