– Youth Educations activity of OSA Student Chapter at ZJU

Aiming at spread optical scientific knowledge & stimulate teenagers’ interest, on July 7, OSA and SPIE student chapters at Zhejiang University, the Swedish undergraduate exchange students and the students from Changhe High School located far from Zhejiang University jointly organized the third youth educations activity named “Lights up hope & Enrich understanding of science”.

This is cooperation after a series of activities such as science camp activities sponsored by OSA Chapter in ZJU last July; members visited Changhe High School, and shared with graduating students face to face last December. The public welfare activity aims to disseminate knowledge of optics, and inspire high school students of scientific dreams, which is another pace at the public road of our chapter. This activity also provides an opportunity for members close contact with the optical manufacturing and processing enterprises scene, processes, operation mode, promote understanding and awareness of the optical industry.

Through last two years’ cooperation, the camping activity was highly estimated among the high school students and their teachers, so more participants came to our school this time. All the volunteers from our chapter held a meeting to arrange the timing and staffing duties. The meeting lasted for one hours. On July 7, 8:30 a.m., nearly ninety high school students with their teachers from Changhe High School arrived our Zhejiang University, Zijingang Campus by bus. The East BLDG #5 hanged the banners writing “Warm welcome to guests from Changhe High School” in both English and Chinese. Our members led the teenagers into the main venue in building #5, and distributed everyone luncheon voucher, souvenir pen and notebook with the words of Zhejiang University and mineral water.

Firstly, Mr. Chen from Changhe School expressed their thanks to our chapter, and made a brief review of the close relationships between the two schools. He encouraged the teenagers being more active in giving feedback. Subsequently, the host Senlin Zhang gave a welcoming speech and briefly introduced activity process as well as the research contents of opening laboratory. Then Dr. Pengfei Kou gave a brief science knowledge introduction, about “Develop novel solar energy and drive the future life”. There is an interesting part that two Swedish student from Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), who are going on a research summer camp here. Robert introduced their different life in the Swedish high school. “Are your homework assignments in high school too heavy?”, ”What kinds of activities and communities can you participate in your university?” Such questions attracted these high school students’ attention.

Following is visiting laboratories. The volunteers of OSA student chapter at Zhejiang University were divided into six groups and led the high school students visited the Clean Room, Network Lab, Grating Lab Laser Lab, Bio photonics Lab and Laser Spectroscopy Lab. The all experiments and stories were introduced in interesting way and the explanation was adaptive to the understanding of the teenagers. Rainbow phenomenon by the prism, alternate change for brightness and darkness by the polarizers, and such experiments were carefully designed and explained to the teenagers appropriately. They were also encouraged to do what they are fancy with. As a good circumstance, the senior students asked questions actively, and participated in discussions.

After lunch they were taken to walk-around in the campus. Many of them wondered the contents different subjects studying. Then we set off for a visit to the Hangzhou Silan Microelectronics Co. Ltd. along with the students from KTH. The officers of the company gave us a warm welcome.

An engineer from Hangzhou Silan Integrated Circuits Co. Ltd. gave a report about the integrated circuits fabrication. First of all, he briefly introduced the fundamental knowledge of the semiconductor chips. Then, he presented the current manufacture level of the Silan Integrated Circuts Co. Ltd. Finally, a video about the standard CMOS production process was shown to make the students better understand the integrated circuits industry.

Next, an engineer from Hangzhou Silan Azure Co. Ltd. gave us a report about the LED products of the company. First of all, he introduced their fabrications from the LED arrays at the Tiananmen Square to the LED lights used on many occasions. Secondly, a brief fabrication process of LED was showed. Finally, he made an outlook about the future development of the LED manufacturing industry and LED markets.

After a whole afternoon visit, we returned to school by bus. We had a better understanding about the integrated circuits and LEDs, attributing to this activity.

The activities focusing on teenagers’ education held successfully with OSA & SPIE members together. As a good consequence, we have made friends with the teenagers, and made a good relationship with Changhe High school. Through this activity, OSA student Chapter at Zhejiang University serves the society in the new form of knowledge and skills. We have the faith to continue going further popularization of science among young people.

Make Your Presentation More Attractive

–Sharing session of OSA Student Chapter at ZJU

Making presentation is an essential and necessary skill in our study and work area. As a useful tool, PowerPoint prepared meticulously can show our ideas better to the audience. Along with more members attending academic conference presentations, to help them do better, the OSA Student Chapter at Zhejiang University held “the Sharing of PPT Design” on June 21st, 2014, in our research center.

As the invited guest, Dr. Hongze Lin once studied in the “Studio of Design and Innovation”, which was launch in December 2008 by Kezhen Zhu department of Zhejiang University, and recruit only 40 students each year. Dr. Hongze Lin have a deeper involvement in PPT organize and design.

At 2:00 p.m., the sharing session began. “Designing is a simple thing.” At the beginning, Dr. Hongze Lin actually set a relaxing tone for the entire presentation. He introduced the experience from several aspects: examples for front cover; the use of plate; the font & color. In each aspect, he expressed his own insights and illustrated his past PPT work. At last, he recommended us some books & websites, and encourage us to abandon the template, try more other styles, and finally find our own feelings. In the next Q&A section, Dr. Hongze Lin communicated patiently with other members.

After the session, many members said benefit a lot from the sharing, and look forward to more activities related to the study and research. We chapter will do our best to give more chances to capable members to show themselves and also help others among our chapter, or more widely range.

Enrich Your Understanding of Industries & Scientific Research

-visit to Shanghai of OSA Student Chapter at ZJU

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light (Genesis).

On March 18th, 2014, 25 members of the student chapter of the Optical Society of America (OSA) at Zhejiang University paid a visit to LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA held in Shanghai, China. On the following day, we organized friendly joint with the OSA student chapter at East China Normal University and visited the State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy (LPS).
LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA, which is the leading regional trade fair for optical technologies in China, was held during March 18th to 20th, 2014 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center by Messe München International. 628 exhibitors from 22 countries booked an unprecedented 34,500 square meters of floor space, and up to 37,272 visitors went to the exhibition. The products covered a variety of research areas, including laser technology and photoelectron, optics and optical manufacturing, production and processing technology of laser, imaging, testing and quality control.

The members of OSA at Zhejiang University arrived at the Shanghai New International Expo Center around 1:00pm. As soon as we stepped into the exhibition hall, our members were attracted by all sorts of the exhibits on display. Though we were not coming with the bulk orders, the exhibitors introduced their products and answered our questions with great enthusiasm and patient. After a three and a half hours visiting, we left the Shanghai New International Expo Center at 4:30pm with great benefit. All the products we saw made us have more confidence in the development of the optical and laser industry and research work we engaged in.

On March 19th, we had a friendly visit to the OSA student chapter at East China Normal University as planned. On that morning, the president of two OSA chapters shared the student activities and the experience in the last year. The members of both chapters also discussed the major research areas they worked on. In the afternoon, we had a visit to the State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy by the lead of the OSA members at East China Normal University. This lab focuses on the precise spectroscopy in frequency domain, precise spectroscopy of atoms and molecules, ultra-sensitive spectroscopy, cross-over frontier study and application of precise spectroscopy and advanced theoretical work of precise spectroscopy. Some members have a deep talk with the researchers there on relative projects.

With discussion about the experience in these two days on the whole return trip, we came back to Zhejiang University in the evening of 19th Mar. 2014. The visit to the LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA broadened our horizon of the optical technology and industry, and the visit to East China Normal University gave us a chance to get in touch with the research of precise spectroscopy. We all look forward to attending the LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA with our own products someday.

OSA Fellow Lecture from Dr. Cun-Zheng Ning to OSA Student Chapter at Zhejiang University

On Dec. 4 2013, OSA student chapter at Zhejiang University was so honored to have Dr. Cun-Zheng Ning, one extraordinary researcher in nanolaser realm, gave a friendly visit to our Centre of Electromagnetic and Optical Research. At 9 o’clock, our Prof. Sailing He led Dr. Ning to visit our laboratories and exchanged the research points. Following, Dr. Ning gave an excellent lecture to our OSA student chapter as part of the OSA Traveling Lecture. Members of our chapter and the researchers here were present at the seminar.

At the beginning of the workshop, our president, Lin Yang, briefly introduced the research experience and outstanding works of Dr. Ning. Thereafter, Dr. Ning simply came straight to the point of the reasons why scientists endeavor in the research of nanolasers. Some applications and priorities to common lasers were enumerated by Dr. Ning followed by the roadmap and physical mechanism of the nanolasers utilizing metallic cavity. The goals of designing nanolasers were listed and the subsequent parts of the presentation were all about the arduous efforts to realize nanolasers with continuous wave operated in room temperature under electrical injection.

In the FAQs section, Prof. Sailing He and Prof. Daoxin Dai had an interaction with Dr. Ning about the physical limits of the nanolasers’ performance. Other issues, such as implementing nanolasers in visible wavelength and the idea substituting heavily doped semiconductors for metal, were raised by our members subsequently. Dr. Ning discussed and answerd questions patiently.

Both the mentors and our student members benefit a lot from the discourse of Dr. Ning and we do yearn for more such traveling lectures from OSA.

Join Us & Enjoy the Life

-New Recruitment of OSA Student Chapter at ZJU

In order to greet new enrolled graduates and absorb more members, on Nov 23-24, Optical Society of America (OSA) at Zhejiang University Student Chapter organized a new recruitment by organizing a visit to Huzhou located from Hangzhou. About 27 members of the chapter participated actively and spent a happy weekend together. We chapter reimbursed all expense as a welfare of membership.

With the arrangement of the previous day, at 6:30 a.m. on the 23rd, 27 members from Center for Optical and Electromagnetic Research of ZJU congregated and then went to Hangzhou Railway Station together. Along the way we felt very excited, the bus is also unimpeded. We took the D5604 train to Huzhou. At 9:30 a.m., we arrived at Huzhou city and went straight to the TieFo Temple founded in 713 AD. After this visit, we had a typical lunch full of local features, the Wonton and buns which were two of “Huzhou four famous dessert”.

Following the delicious lunch and happy communication, the Museum of Chinese writing brush from Huzhou was our second destination. Huzhou writing brush, one of the “the four precious articles of the writing table”, is an important symbol of brilliant Chinese civilization. The diverse display shows the inheritance and development of Chinese culture, many members were attracted by the paintings and calligraphy exhibition of masterpieces. In the sunny afternoon, going sightseeing a local famous park was a wonderful choice for us. Members had a relaxing strolling and got a lot better at knowing each other.

At 4:00 p.m., all attendees took bus to the ancient town named Nanxun, and made accommodation, all arranged by the organizers in perfect order.

On 23rd night, according to the arrangements, we hold a meeting about the change of state leadership. Through investigation and vote, former Treasurer, Xiaoyan Wang was honored to be the new President of our student chapter. The four former officers reported the past year working and highly praised Xiaoyan Wang’ efforts, which was also recognized by attending members. It’s deeply believed that under her leadership, OSA Student Chapter at Zhejiang University will benefits members more opportunities and even broader exchange platform, do more for also the society and go further.

The next day saw the wonderful travel around Nanxun Ancient Town that is one of the “Chinese Six Famous Ancient Towns”. Here are many monuments, which are in harmony with natural beauty, full of historical and cultural heritage and aura. Discovering the residence of an ancient culture is also part of the pleasure that awaits the traveling visitor. Because of less commercial atmosphere, the Town is suitable for members to enjoy the scenery and happy life.

At 3:00 p.m., we returned back to Hangzhou, and two days of travel visit to Huzhou came to a successful conclusion.

After the recruitment, our OSA Student Chapter at Zhejiang University is standing on the new starting point for development. We look forward to the future.

Members Attending ACP Conference

During 12nd to 15th Nov. 2013, seven members from Optical Society of America (OSA) at Zhejiang University Student Chapter attended Asia Communication and Photonics Conference (ACP) in Beijing. Through learning talks from outstanding scientists and experts and communicating with students from all over the world, we benefited much not only on academic research but also the industry opinions.

ACP is the premier conference in the Asia-Pacific region on photonics and relevant technologies including photonic materials and devices, communication and network technologies, sensing technologies, biophotonic technologies, illumination technologies, and other photonic technologies regarding energy issues. In ACP/IPOC’2013, a special symposium in memory of beloved Dr. Yingye Li was organized. As the former chair of OSA and world-known expert on optical communication, he visited Zhejiang University and fortunately gave our chapter a special visit because of the care for OSA and young researchers. Members attended the conference widened horizon greatly since we involved in different workshops on our own fields.

On 11st Nov. before the conference, the chapter held a sodality with OSA student chapter at South China Normal University (SCNU) to the Summer Palace. As one of the art treasure of Chinese Ancient Parks, the summer palace has not only important aesthetic and historical value, but also necessary ecological values. With the friendship established at last year ACP conference in Guangzhou, members from the two chapters visited the palace and discussed how to foster a one-class chapter. In the meanwhile, our members discussed some scientific topics with our friends, since we had similar but not totally same research areas.

This journey to Beijing was proven to be a nice one by all accounts. We talked with scholars from different places and exchanged experiences in ideas, simulations, experiments, and so on, which turned to be an unforgettable experience to us.

It’s worth mentioning that besides the journey in Beijing, Hongyan Liu, secretary of the chapter visited to Tianjin and gave a conversation with the students from Tianjin University who would like to form an OSA Student Chapter in their university. She introduced the status of chapter at Zhejiang University, the procedure and essential condition for a new OSA student chapter; what is more, she shared her experience in organizing activities patiently. Considering the enthusiastic students were sophomore students, lack of sufficient professional knowledge and laboratory support, she suggested them to build up a close cooperative relation with the chapter at Nankai University located next to Tianjin University, and also kept in touch with our Zhejiang University chapter for further help and longtime relationship.

Focus on Micro-nano Photonics

– Academic Visit to Nanjing of OSA Stu. Chapter at ZJU

During 28th July and 1st Aug. 2013, although Hangzhou was intolerable warm, our students were still full of enthusiasm. Optical Society of America (OSA) at Zhejiang University Student Chapter organized the “Nanjing academic visit” activities, and 27 members from our chapter participated actively. As one of the few invited groups by College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Engineering quantum electronics and optics at Nanjing University (NJU), OSA student chapter at Zhejiang University (ZJU) participated “Micro-Nano Photonics and Applications” in 2013 National Doctoral Forum organized by Nanjing University, and organized friendly joint with OSA student chapter at NJU. The event mainly aimed to provide an academic exchange platform high-level and wide-ranging for the participants, broaden academic horizons and stimulate creative thinking, which totally encourage members to make more influential scientific researches as soon as possible.

With the arrangement of the previous day, at 9:00 a.m. on the 28th, 27 members from Center for Optical and Electromagnetic Research of ZJU congregated and took a group photo at East BLDG #5, Zijingang Campus, and then went to Hangzhou East Railway Station together. Along the way we felt very excited, the bus is also unimpeded. Through precise calculation by the President, an hour’s drive guaranteed the smooth arrival. We took the recently opened G7670 train to Nanjing. At 2:00 p.m., under the leadership of the President of OSA Student Chapter at Nanjing University, we went straight to the Gulou Campus, and registered for the conference, made accommodation, all arranged by the organizers in perfect order.

On 28th night, according to the arrangements, we visited the National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures (NLSSM) of NJU. NLSSM was established in 1984, among the first group of state key laboratories established in China. As a fundamental research laboratory, the missions of NLSSM are to design and fabricate new artificial microstructured materials via designing and tailoring the energy band structures in reciprocal space, find out new macroscopic and microscopic quantum effects and principles, develop new theories and methodology based on quantum physics, and endeavor to meet the scientific challenges and technological requirements encountered in the post-Moore era and the post-petroleum era. The host organized graduates familiar with the laboratory to do a detailed introduction. The laboratory published in “Nature” published for the first time, to achieve a breakthrough, followed by three papers in “Science”. From 2000 to 2005, great progress has been made with 37 papers in “Phys. Rev. Lett.”. We impressed greatly with these statistics, and made up our mind to pursue greater breakthroughs. The visit lasted about two hours, and we learned a lot, from a broad selection of academic orientation to specific experimental study.

“Micro-Nano Photonics and Applications” Doctoral Forum was officially opened in 29th. As invited guests, the main tasks of our participants were including two parts: make a report and listening to reports. Report was relatively easy and pleasant to listen to, you can understand, or completely do not understand, but should be active to ask questions. How much you learnt depended on your knowledge acquired and reporter’s speech skills.

The forum invited Prof. Zhang Xiang from the American Academy of Engineering, Prof. Xiao Min from Nanjing University, Yuan Xiaocong from Nankai University Professor, Prof. Zhou Zhiping from Peking University, Prof. Tong Limin from Zhejiang University, Prof. Li Zhiyuan from Chinese Institute of Physics, Prof. Xu Hongxing from Wuhan University. This day, the celebrity’s report was the highlight of this trip, and a full day’s reports were spiritual feast. In particular, Berkeley Prof. Zhang Xiang, was as famous as his technique: negative refraction – “invisibility cloak”. And Prof Zhang team’s development model and research areas were both related to our team, which attracted most our members. Prof. Zhang had been committed to the preparation of micro-nano structure, characterization and physical device design; the ultra-structural material, surface plasmon laser science, optical frequency conversion optics and other areas. He developed the first surplus lens, whose resolution of optical imaging was beyond the diffraction limit for the first time. His research group made prominent contributions in the field of micro-and nano photonics. We were impressed and inspired by his innovative thinking, rigorous and in-depth theoretical analysis, which set our team a good academic example.

In the evening of July 29th, a grand workshop was organized. The invited professors are not only giants on scientific research, but also some international journal editors and life guide. The most difficult in life was to make choices at the various crossroads, and most topics were around the word “choose”. It was good to do research at home or on broad, to work or to do research, series of such questions were asked and answered patiently. The editor teachers also shared their review insights for article writing. Congratulations to their success, and we looked forward to their future more brilliant! Meanwhile, we hoped more people inspiration and encouragement to realize their glory!

End of this fraternity, OSA student chapters in ZJU and NJU held in a simple friendship. The members exchanged of academic acquaintance, living in Nanjing and Hangzhou. The new Chairman of NJU chapter made in-depth conversation with the present and the former Chairman of ZJU, which lasted for over two hours.

On 30th, there was the second main process of academic conference: students group reports. The former chairman Xiaowei Guan gave up his usual witty style, but made the colleague audiences interested only use expertise. The presentation was relaxed, but also technical. In the subsequent competitions, member Xiaowei Guan and Fei Ding won oral presentation and poster Excellence Award respectively. At the closing dinner in evening, Chairman Lin Yang as the only doctoral representative made a speech and thanked the organizers and OSA student chapter at NJU, expressed congratulations to the success of the forum. Finally, we presented homemade souvenirs to the friendly chapter, on which the acrostic won warm applause.

There was Nanjing one-day tour organized by NJU on 31th. The former Presidential Palace located in ancient Nanjing was our first destination, which have become the largest modern history museum. We also visited Mausoleum of Sun Yat-sen and Qinhuai River.

We continued to stay one night and returned back to Hangzhou on 1st Aug. Five days of academic visit to Nanjing came to a successful conclusion.

In summary, the doctoral forum makes sense. Firstly, through understanding of related study groups from different schools and institutes, we can learn their strengths and find our advantage, and more importantly, not only broaden our horizons, but also enhance the determination and confidence to make world-class research. secondly, the good friendship with NJU OSA student chapter lays foundation for future cooperation. Third, the all members said had enhanced lots on both academic and experience, and enjoyed.

This four-day visit is a milestone event in our chapter’s academic activities, and all participants learn a lot. It’s believed there will be more opportunities for our members and students in COER to exchange and communicate in academics. More efforts and greater value will be made for us to step out labs and others to come to our chapter.

In order to practice public welfare and provide a favorable help to young people, our chapter has established close links with Changhe High School. The high school students have visited our center twice, we also are invited to visit the high school, through the sharing of the university entrance examination experiences, and research, other cognitive aspects of life to help high school graduating students a better understanding of themselves, and relieve stress, build confidence.

Firstly, the host Pengfei Kou gave a welcoming speech and the Party branch secretary Qiangsheng Huang briefly described the developments of Optical Engineering Department and COER. Then Mr. Chen from Changhe School expressed their thanks to our chapter, and made a brief review of the close relationships between the two schools. There is an interesting part that two Swedish exchange student Donniel introduced their different life in the Swedish high school, taught Swedish and answers student’s various questions. With Emil and Donniel singing Swedish songs, the atmosphere reached a climax. Subsequently, Senlin Zhang introduced specific circumstances of optical engineering and optical communications as well as our center’s study fields, by the help of PPT. After, Pengfei Kou representing COER gave Changhe School crystal gifts, engraved with the Changhe High School, Zhejiang University, COER, IEEE and OSA logos.

Following there is the main activity areas – visit laboratories. OSA Zhejiang University chapter members were divided into six groups and led the high school students visited the Clean Room, Microwave Photonics Laboratory, Laser Lab, Bio photonics Lab and Laser Spectroscopy Lab. The all experiments and stories were introduced in interesting way and the explanation was adaptive to the understanding of the teenagers. Rainbow phenomenon by the prism, alternate change for brightness and darkness by the polarizers, and such experiments were carefully designed and explained to the teenagers appropriately. They were also encouraged to do what they are fancy with. As a good circumstance, the senior students asked questions actively, and participated in discussions.

After lunch, we organized all participants to visit optical communications industry in Hangzhou. In Fuchun Optical Communications Industry Park, fiber process of packaging, coloring and testing were shown. In another Focused Photonics (Hangzhou), students understood not only a variety of environmental monitoring instruments and technology, but also the company’s operating mode. Through these two photoelectric company visit, further contacts and understanding of the optoelectronic industry were achieved. At 4:00 p.m., We and the students returned to school respective.

The second public welfare activities focusing on teenagers’ education held successfully with OSA & IEEE members together. As a good consequence, we have made friends with the teenagers, and made a good relationship with Changhe High school. Through this activity, OSA student Chapter at Zhejiang University serves the society in the new form of knowledge and skills. We have the faith to continue going further popularization of science among young people.

Step out Labs and Make a Different Understanding of Industries & Scientific Research

—- visit to Shanghai of OSA Student Chapter at Zhejiang University

In awaken spring, during 19-20 Mar. 2013, the student chapter of OSA at Zhejiang University organized a visit to “LASER World of PHOTONICS” in Shanghai. About twenty members of the chapter attended the exhibition. We also had the chance to visit the “Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics of Chinese Academy of Science (SIOM)”, and polish a happy & fulfilling exchange with the OSA student chapter at SIOM.

“LASER World of PHOTONICS” is the world’s leading trade show for optical technologies. Since 1973, it has taken place every two years in Munich, Germany. “LASER World of PHOTONICS” is the leading regional trade show for optical technologies in CHINA.

With the new World of Photonics Portal, the new information and networking platform for the photonics industry, Munich International Trade Fairs addresses the industrial and scientific communities and users of optical technologies, giving them an excellent opportunity to exchange information. The platform provides the virtual photonics community with information about events and covers the topics Business Life, Market, Products and Business Club. Participation are mostly industry renowned manufacturers, such as TRUMPF, Rofin, Staubli, ABB, Zeiss,Olympus, and so on. Many company’s products are often used in our experimental process, like the laser of the Coherent Company, microscope of Olympus.

As soon as we arrived at the halls, members could not wait to have a close look at the various new technologies and products. The exhibitioners are divided into four parts according to their research field. The many latest technology and products make everyone amazing, especially the laser processing industry. Sophisticated processing technology, unique style, warm customer negotiations atmosphere, all these let our members find everything new and fresh. Different from often staying in the laboratory, the exhibition makes us closely feel research and operation of the enterprise, what’s more, it enhances our confidence in our photoelectric industry.

The students showed high enthusiasm during the 2-hour-long visit, and the plentiful products & latest technologies used in industry seemed to draw a lot of their attention that many members were late for the deadline to get together. Although we reluctantly left the show, but the discussion still continues, the shock of the enterprise and introspection on our own scientific research also continues.

As planned, we went to the SIOM to have a friendly visit in the next day. The students there gave us a warm reception and showed us around their laboratories. The research of High Power laser and Physics test device, named “Shenguang”, was mainly introduced by the host, which shocked us deeply and attracted some members to have a deep talk with the researchers there. With their accompaniment, we also visited State Key Laboratory of High Field Laser Physics. The researchers in SIOM and us reached a consensus to have more cooperation in academic exchange.

According to their introducing, ShenguangⅡ high-power laser experiment device is the domestic first platform of large laser device related experiment ability, and the Shooting Range System is most closely combining the physics experiments & physical diagnosis, which has been honored as “the engineering of making an little artificial sun a big on earth “. In 2012, the technique won the the integrated operation of science and technology award of Chinese academy of sciences major infrastructure running annual meeting. In visit, our members and researcher there discussed deeply at the institute of physics experiment requirements, specific requirements of laser and drive units, etc. After the meeting, the two student chapter chairmans: Lin Yang and Shuang Liu introduced both basic situation, and learnt activity ideas from each other. Yang said:” We student chapter should make our most efforts to strive for growing communication platform of different student chapter, design activities creatively and meaningfully. Our only goal is to service our all members wholeheartedly.”

The members came back to Zhejiang University in the evening of 20 Mar. 2013. In spite of the exhausting journey, we all look forward to the exhibition next year to broaden the vision of our field, especially the technologies from the top companies. Also the visit to SIOM gave us a chance to get in touch with the research institute of CHINESE SCIENCE ACADEMY, which may have a different operation mode from the universities.

This activity is the first in this year, our members evaluate it making sense. Believe that following activities for our members and the students in the center will provide more communication opportunities, and create even greater value for all.

Current Status of the Chapter & Increase of membership

The OSA Student Chapter in Zhejiang University (OSA@ZJU) is located in COER (Centre for Optical and Electromagnetic Research, Department of optical engineering, Zhejiang University, China), an international lab aiming to research the frontiers in optics and photonics. Members here are all enthusiastic students from
all around the university, majoring in optics, photonics, physics and chemistry. They are committed to passing the “light” to the next youth generation, developing the OSA’s influence in China, and “light” everyone’s life and the world!

Period from the October 2012 to the March 2013 has witnessed the unprecedentedly amazing development of the chapter. Some remarkable data and pictures below should be remembered:
● The influence of chapter got a further step. The members have been increasing from 22 to 42 during this period, which means the rate of increase is almost 100%!

● We have our own logo, item with our logo, video in the YouTube; and the T-shirt with the logo and our own website are on the way to be produced and will be opened in this March!OSA logo_Larger

● We have organized several professional activities, and participated in many international conferences, such as ACP, IONS-ASIA, etc. Our members enthusiastically throw themselves into youth education for high school students with difficulties.
● The chapter has built a long-time connection with OSA student chapters in other universities, such as Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and South China Normal University, and also, with the SPIE and IEEE student chapters in Zhejiang University
