Optics into Primary School

On Dec. 17th 2015, the OSA student chapter at Zhejiang University organized a communicating activity with teachers and students of Chaoshan Centre Primary School located in the suburb of Yuhang District, Hangzhou,China, aiming to warm them up in the winter and arouse their interest in science. At the same time, we gave them an introduction of some basic optical knowledge. Twenty of our members took part in it.

The class began at 9:30 a.m. There were about 75 students attending our activity.

From morning to the afternoon, three lectures were reported in the class focusing on two different topics. One of the topics was to teach them some optical phenomena and the other one focused on the psychological health, including teaching them to firm in spirit and try their best to work hard.

During the first class, Weixi Liu and Huifang Chen, members of our OSA student chapter, gave them a class about the first topic mentioned above. They explained some basic optical phenomena to them, such as pin-hole imaging and mirage. They tried to ask more questions to make all of the students participate in the class. Most of the students raised their hands and answered these questions perfectly. At last, Jiang Li, the vice president of OSA student chapter at Zhejiang University; Jingye Chen, Jing Jia and Jingguang Tong, officers of our chapter, guided them to do some demonstrative experiment of optics using optical suitcase, and the students were excited to learn a lot from the interesting phenomena. To our surprise, one of the students found the explanation of polarization experiment in the class. All of the students were immersed in the interesting experiment. We gave them pieces of polarizers as a keepsake after class.

As regards the second topic in this activity, members from Institute of Optical Inertia, the joint organizer of this activity, gave these students a psychological training lecture about dreams. When asked what dreams they have, these students spoke out their dreams confirmedly. One student stood up firstly, and said, “I want to study optics in the future.” What a surprise! We were so happy to hear this voice coming from a little boy. Finally, we told them an inspiring story of an Australian person, Nick Vujicic, to encourage them and build up their confidence in life and study.

Through the whole activity, the students had expanded their horizons, particularly in the optics science. They were highly encouraged to have a dream and work hard, and were taught methods to solve the problems and overcome the problems they might meet in the future. Our members established the contact with the students, so that the students could get help after this activity. We are looking forward to cooperating with the teachers and students next time.

– OSA Traveling Lecture at student chapter at Zhejiang University

On Nov.  2015, OSA student chapter at Zhejiang University was honored to invite  Di Liang, a research scientist at Hewlett Packard Labs, to have a friendly visit to our Centre of Optical and Electromagnetic Research through the OSA traveling lecture program. At 9:30 a.m., Dr. Liang gave a remarkable lecture entitled “Si Photonics for Data Centers and Beyond”. Members in our student chapter together with the researchers here were present at the seminar. Through the Traveling Lecture, we all benefited a lot from the academic research as well as the industry development.

To start with the seminar, Hao Wu, president of our student chapter, briefly introduced the research experience and outstanding achievements of Dr. Liang. Afterwards, Dr. Liang gave a detailed talk about the work on Si photonics interconnects for HP data centers. The overall effort and the roadmap of Hewlett Packard Labs on Si photonics were reviewed. Key components in the Si photonics link, including hybrid microring lasers, Si microring modulators, hybrid Si photodectors and SiGe APDs, were introduced and discussed in details. To sum up, Dr. Liang generalized not only technical obstacles but also market outlook about Si photonics interconnects.

In the FAQs section, Prof. Shiming Gao and Assoc. Prof. Yaocheng Shi discussed with Dr. Liang about the most promising bonding technology with silicon. Futher in-depth discussions in free bonding were followed. Members in our student chapter took an active part in this section and concerned about the commercial applications and development. Dr. Liang discussed it according to current nanofabrication and hybrid bonding technology from the perspective of a research scientist at HP Labs.

The Traveling Lecture from OSA did broaden our horizon and advance us to higher research level. Our student chapter are looking forward to the next Traveling Lecture.

Tell You a Story about Light, Different from the Textbook

– Youth Education Activity of OSA student chapter at Zhejiang University

On July 8th 2015, the OSA student chapter at Zhejiang University organized a youth education activity, inviting some of the first-year students from Hangzhou Changhe High School ( Most of the students came from poor families, who had less education resources. Our event aimed at providing access to interesting and basic optics knowledge, meanwhile inspiring them to explore in the field of optics. The event was also supported by SPIE and IEEE student chapter at Zhejiang University.

 The event was divided into 2 parts. Lectures delivered by our members gave the students a first glance of optics. Then the students were engaged in the experiments to gain practical experience of optical research.

The lecture began at 12:00 a.m. in the conference room of our center. Senling Zhang, an OSA member, gave a brief introduction to the college of optical science and engineering, along with the major of optical engineering. Jun Yuan, the president of IEEE student chapter at Zhejiang University, gave a talk about the development of optics. Christian Huygens, Isaac Newton, James Clerk Maxwell and Albert Einstein were introduced with their fundamental theory and great contribution. Students obtained a rough picture of optics through these lectures and some basic knowledge they might use in the following experiments.

After lectures, students were divided into 10 groups, taking turns to join the different experiments. For each experiment, one member was in charge of explaining the principle, demonstrating the operation and instructing students to finish it by themselves. We had designed 9 basic experiments shown in the following table.

 With the instruction of our members, students understood some basic optical theory through interesting and visualized experiments, which gave them a deep impression. Most of the students were so deeply attracted by different experiments that some students even did not want to leave after the gathering time.

Through this event, our chapter enhanced our friendship and long term cooperation relationship with Hangzhou Changhe High School. We shouldered our responsibility of youth education, spreading optics knowledge to more young students. Our members practiced their skills of presentation and communication with teenagers during this event.

Join OSA and Illuminate Your Future

 –Chapter Promotion and Recruitment Event

In order to promote our chapter and attract more new members, we held a spring out. We chose LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA in Shanghai as our destination to attract more freshmen major in optical engineering, since most of them are quite interesting in this exhibition. Meanwhile, we could visit the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIOM) and build our networking with the OSA student chapter at SIOM.

March 17, 2015, 11 members of the student chapter of the Optical Society of America (OSA) at Zhejiang University travelled to Shanghai to visit the LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA and SIOM.

LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA was held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center March 17-19. As Asia’s largest laser, optics, optoelectronics industry event, from basic research to industrial applications, LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA lead the industrial trends, showcasing the full range of product, including lasers and photonics, optics and optical manufacturing, laser production and processing technologies, imaging, detection, and quality control. The exhibition attracted 715 exhibitors from 20 countries worldwide, showing their latest products, technologies and equipment.

As soon as the members stepped into the exhibition hall, they were attracted by all sorts of the exhibitions on display. In conventional optical exhibition, machine vision is undoubtedly a popular theme, which is usually used for production control and testing. The workshop on Machine Vision attracted a large number of participants. In laser and laser processing exhibition, all kinds of lasers, such as ultrafast lasers, high-power lasers, fiber lasers, semiconductor lasers, made the members appreciate the rapid development of laser industry. What the students saw gave them a more clear and comprehensive understanding of the practical applications of optoelectronic industry, which means a lot for their future research work.

March 18, the members came to SIOM. Leading by the president of OSA student chapter at SIOM, we visited the Laboratory, which focuses on the Shenzhou Ⅱ project. They are now building the ninth laser road to enhance the power, which is important for fusion reaction. During the visit, some members communicated their ideas with the president of OSA chapter at SIOM in depth.

We came back to Hangzhou in the afternoon of March 18. This visit to Shanghai broadened our horizon of the optical technology and industry, also gave us a chance to get in touch with the research of SIOM.

Through this activity, we attracted 11 more new members to our chapter. Additionally, we met with the OSA student chapter at SIOM and exchange our experience in holding activities.

Enrich Your Understranding of Science & the Light

– Youth Education activity of OSA Student Chapter at ZJU

On Jan. 1st 2015, the OSA student chapter at Zhejiang University organized a communication activity with teachers and students in Changhe Senior High School ( located in the outskirts of Hangzhou city, aiming at sharing the studying experience and life in high school and the university, meanwhile give them an introduction to the Optical Engineering and basic optical knowledge. Twenty of us arrived at the school at 2:30 p.m. We have a meeting first to assign our members to different classes.

The whole activity was divided into two parts. One was a psychological training program which was a new part this year, and the other was in-class lectures focusing on two different topics. One of the topic was to share the study experience and information of Optical Engineering and the other was concentrated on the psychological health, including teaching them to reduce the pressure during the study and examination, which is also a new topic this year.

During the psychological training activity, we had a training program to reduce the pressure during the preparation of coming College Entrance Examination, meanwhile increase their energy and concentration. Two students were picked up from every class and were divided into 4 groups. After an interactive game, everyone joined in and our members got familiar with each other immediately. Then, the students were encourage to give a talk about how to prepare for the College Entrance Examination at the subject which they were good at. At last, we give some demonstrative experiment of optics using optical suitcase, in which students had been excited from the interesting phenomena. Xiaoyan Wang, the former president of OSA student chapter at Zhejiang University, together with Borui Li, another member of OSA, distributed the equipments in the optical suitcase to the students. With the help of equipment, they explained the polarization, dispersion, diffraction of light to these high school students. Everyone was attracted by the interesting experiment and their vivid explanation. They were not willing to leave even when the time was up, so that the activity was extend for extra 20 minutes.

For the in-class lectures, our members were distributed to each class. We did not determine the content of the lecture, require members to concentrate on the topics we had mentioned above. As an example, Xiong Yang mainly introduced to these students about the colorful life in the university, in order to encourage the students to work hard and get enrolled by their dream universities. Shipeng Wang focused on his own experience during the study in high school. He suggested that students should not only engage themselves in the sea of examination papers, but also summarize and introspect themselves immediately after the exams. Keqi Ma and Penghao Liu introduced the optical knowledge and the Optical Engineering which we majored in to the students. There was a Q. & A. session after each lecture. Students from Changhe High School were so eager to ask all kinds of questions from the study in high schools and life in universities that some of our members even missed our time of gathering.

Through this activity for the Changhe Senior High School, the students had expanded their horizons, particularly in the Optical Engineering. They were highly encouraged to work hard for the coming University Entrance Examination, and were taught methods to solve the problems and overcome the problems they might met in the future. Our members also established the contact with the students, so that the students can get help after the activity was over. We are looking forward to cooperate with the members at Changhe Senior High School next time.

Every student in Changhe Senior High participated in the activity were asked to fill in a questionnaire to give a feedback to our activity. Almost every student was satisfied with our activity and was willing take part in again. More results of the questionnaire will be shown on our website.

Lights up hope & Enrich Understanding of science

– Youth Educations activity of OSA Student Chapter at ZJU

Aiming at spread optical scientific knowledge & stimulate teenagers’ interest, on July 7, OSA and SPIE student chapters at Zhejiang University, the Swedish undergraduate exchange students and the students from Changhe High School located far from Zhejiang University jointly organized the third youth educations activity named “Lights up hope & Enrich understanding of science”.

This is cooperation after a series of activities such as science camp activities sponsored by OSA Chapter in ZJU last July; members visited Changhe High School, and shared with graduating students face to face last December. The public welfare activity aims to disseminate knowledge of optics, and inspire high school students of scientific dreams, which is another pace at the public road of our chapter. This activity also provides an opportunity for members close contact with the optical manufacturing and processing enterprises scene, processes, operation mode, promote understanding and awareness of the optical industry.

Through last two years’ cooperation, the camping activity was highly estimated among the high school students and their teachers, so more participants came to our school this time. All the volunteers from our chapter held a meeting to arrange the timing and staffing duties. The meeting lasted for one hours. On July 7, 8:30 a.m., nearly ninety high school students with their teachers from Changhe High School arrived our Zhejiang University, Zijingang Campus by bus. The East BLDG #5 hanged the banners writing “Warm welcome to guests from Changhe High School” in both English and Chinese. Our members led the teenagers into the main venue in building #5, and distributed everyone luncheon voucher, souvenir pen and notebook with the words of Zhejiang University and mineral water.

Firstly, Mr. Chen from Changhe School expressed their thanks to our chapter, and made a brief review of the close relationships between the two schools. He encouraged the teenagers being more active in giving feedback. Subsequently, the host Senlin Zhang gave a welcoming speech and briefly introduced activity process as well as the research contents of opening laboratory. Then Dr. Pengfei Kou gave a brief science knowledge introduction, about “Develop novel solar energy and drive the future life”. There is an interesting part that two Swedish student from Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), who are going on a research summer camp here. Robert introduced their different life in the Swedish high school. “Are your homework assignments in high school too heavy?”, ”What kinds of activities and communities can you participate in your university?” Such questions attracted these high school students’ attention.

Following is visiting laboratories. The volunteers of OSA student chapter at Zhejiang University were divided into six groups and led the high school students visited the Clean Room, Network Lab, Grating Lab Laser Lab, Bio photonics Lab and Laser Spectroscopy Lab. The all experiments and stories were introduced in interesting way and the explanation was adaptive to the understanding of the teenagers. Rainbow phenomenon by the prism, alternate change for brightness and darkness by the polarizers, and such experiments were carefully designed and explained to the teenagers appropriately. They were also encouraged to do what they are fancy with. As a good circumstance, the senior students asked questions actively, and participated in discussions.

After lunch they were taken to walk-around in the campus. Many of them wondered the contents different subjects studying. Then we set off for a visit to the Hangzhou Silan Microelectronics Co. Ltd. along with the students from KTH. The officers of the company gave us a warm welcome.

An engineer from Hangzhou Silan Integrated Circuits Co. Ltd. gave a report about the integrated circuits fabrication. First of all, he briefly introduced the fundamental knowledge of the semiconductor chips. Then, he presented the current manufacture level of the Silan Integrated Circuts Co. Ltd. Finally, a video about the standard CMOS production process was shown to make the students better understand the integrated circuits industry.

Next, an engineer from Hangzhou Silan Azure Co. Ltd. gave us a report about the LED products of the company. First of all, he introduced their fabrications from the LED arrays at the Tiananmen Square to the LED lights used on many occasions. Secondly, a brief fabrication process of LED was showed. Finally, he made an outlook about the future development of the LED manufacturing industry and LED markets.

After a whole afternoon visit, we returned to school by bus. We had a better understanding about the integrated circuits and LEDs, attributing to this activity.

The activities focusing on teenagers’ education held successfully with OSA & SPIE members together. As a good consequence, we have made friends with the teenagers, and made a good relationship with Changhe High school. Through this activity, OSA student Chapter at Zhejiang University serves the society in the new form of knowledge and skills. We have the faith to continue going further popularization of science among young people.

Make Your Presentation More Attractive

–Sharing session of OSA Student Chapter at ZJU

Making presentation is an essential and necessary skill in our study and work area. As a useful tool, PowerPoint prepared meticulously can show our ideas better to the audience. Along with more members attending academic conference presentations, to help them do better, the OSA Student Chapter at Zhejiang University held “the Sharing of PPT Design” on June 21st, 2014, in our research center.

As the invited guest, Dr. Hongze Lin once studied in the “Studio of Design and Innovation”, which was launch in December 2008 by Kezhen Zhu department of Zhejiang University, and recruit only 40 students each year. Dr. Hongze Lin have a deeper involvement in PPT organize and design.

At 2:00 p.m., the sharing session began. “Designing is a simple thing.” At the beginning, Dr. Hongze Lin actually set a relaxing tone for the entire presentation. He introduced the experience from several aspects: examples for front cover; the use of plate; the font & color. In each aspect, he expressed his own insights and illustrated his past PPT work. At last, he recommended us some books & websites, and encourage us to abandon the template, try more other styles, and finally find our own feelings. In the next Q&A section, Dr. Hongze Lin communicated patiently with other members.

After the session, many members said benefit a lot from the sharing, and look forward to more activities related to the study and research. We chapter will do our best to give more chances to capable members to show themselves and also help others among our chapter, or more widely range.

Enrich Your Understanding of Industries & Scientific Research

-visit to Shanghai of OSA Student Chapter at ZJU

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light (Genesis).

On March 18th, 2014, 25 members of the student chapter of the Optical Society of America (OSA) at Zhejiang University paid a visit to LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA held in Shanghai, China. On the following day, we organized friendly joint with the OSA student chapter at East China Normal University and visited the State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy (LPS).
LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA, which is the leading regional trade fair for optical technologies in China, was held during March 18th to 20th, 2014 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center by Messe München International. 628 exhibitors from 22 countries booked an unprecedented 34,500 square meters of floor space, and up to 37,272 visitors went to the exhibition. The products covered a variety of research areas, including laser technology and photoelectron, optics and optical manufacturing, production and processing technology of laser, imaging, testing and quality control.

The members of OSA at Zhejiang University arrived at the Shanghai New International Expo Center around 1:00pm. As soon as we stepped into the exhibition hall, our members were attracted by all sorts of the exhibits on display. Though we were not coming with the bulk orders, the exhibitors introduced their products and answered our questions with great enthusiasm and patient. After a three and a half hours visiting, we left the Shanghai New International Expo Center at 4:30pm with great benefit. All the products we saw made us have more confidence in the development of the optical and laser industry and research work we engaged in.

On March 19th, we had a friendly visit to the OSA student chapter at East China Normal University as planned. On that morning, the president of two OSA chapters shared the student activities and the experience in the last year. The members of both chapters also discussed the major research areas they worked on. In the afternoon, we had a visit to the State Key Laboratory of Precision Spectroscopy by the lead of the OSA members at East China Normal University. This lab focuses on the precise spectroscopy in frequency domain, precise spectroscopy of atoms and molecules, ultra-sensitive spectroscopy, cross-over frontier study and application of precise spectroscopy and advanced theoretical work of precise spectroscopy. Some members have a deep talk with the researchers there on relative projects.

With discussion about the experience in these two days on the whole return trip, we came back to Zhejiang University in the evening of 19th Mar. 2014. The visit to the LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA broadened our horizon of the optical technology and industry, and the visit to East China Normal University gave us a chance to get in touch with the research of precise spectroscopy. We all look forward to attending the LASER World of PHOTONICS CHINA with our own products someday.

OSA Fellow Lecture from Dr. Cun-Zheng Ning to OSA Student Chapter at Zhejiang University

On Dec. 4 2013, OSA student chapter at Zhejiang University was so honored to have Dr. Cun-Zheng Ning, one extraordinary researcher in nanolaser realm, gave a friendly visit to our Centre of Electromagnetic and Optical Research. At 9 o’clock, our Prof. Sailing He led Dr. Ning to visit our laboratories and exchanged the research points. Following, Dr. Ning gave an excellent lecture to our OSA student chapter as part of the OSA Traveling Lecture. Members of our chapter and the researchers here were present at the seminar.

At the beginning of the workshop, our president, Lin Yang, briefly introduced the research experience and outstanding works of Dr. Ning. Thereafter, Dr. Ning simply came straight to the point of the reasons why scientists endeavor in the research of nanolasers. Some applications and priorities to common lasers were enumerated by Dr. Ning followed by the roadmap and physical mechanism of the nanolasers utilizing metallic cavity. The goals of designing nanolasers were listed and the subsequent parts of the presentation were all about the arduous efforts to realize nanolasers with continuous wave operated in room temperature under electrical injection.

In the FAQs section, Prof. Sailing He and Prof. Daoxin Dai had an interaction with Dr. Ning about the physical limits of the nanolasers’ performance. Other issues, such as implementing nanolasers in visible wavelength and the idea substituting heavily doped semiconductors for metal, were raised by our members subsequently. Dr. Ning discussed and answerd questions patiently.

Both the mentors and our student members benefit a lot from the discourse of Dr. Ning and we do yearn for more such traveling lectures from OSA.
